General Info

Tucked right in the lively streets of Shinjuku, Chizuru Shokudo is the kind of place you stumble upon and end up remembering long after your trip. This syokudo and teishoku restaurant keeps things simple, but that’s exactly where its charm lies. The setting is casual and smoke-free, making it a comfortable stop whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or settling in for a relaxed meal.

From the moment I stepped inside, the seating felt welcoming without trying too hard. There’s no flashy decor-just a straightforward diner-style space that lets the food do the talking. And honestly, that’s what you’re here for. The menu focuses on classic Japanese set meals, each one thoughtfully balanced with rice, sides, and a comforting bowl of お味噌汁 (miso soup) that ties everything together.

One of the standout dishes is the サバ塩焼き定食 (grilled salted mackerel set). The fish is perfectly cooked-crispy skin on the outside, tender and flaky inside. It’s simple, yet incredibly satisfying. If you’re in the mood for something heartier, the メンチカツ定食 (minced meat cutlet set) hits the spot. It’s crispy, juicy, and pairs beautifully with the rice and soup.

I also tried the ナス味噌炒め定食 (stir-fried eggplant with miso set), which surprised me with its rich, slightly sweet flavor. The eggplant absorbs the miso sauce so well that every bite feels indulgent without being heavy. Meanwhile, the しょうが焼き定食 (ginger pork set) brings a familiar, comforting taste-savory with a gentle kick of ginger that lingers just enough.

Service here is straightforward and efficient, which fits the overall vibe. It’s a cash-only spot, so it’s worth keeping that in mind before you go. The lunch service tends to draw a steady crowd, but turnover is quick, and the atmosphere never feels rushed.

Looking at reviews and the steady flow of locals, it’s clear that this place isn’t trying to be trendy-it’s focused on consistency. And that’s exactly why it works. The combination of honest cooking, a reliable menu, and a no-frills setting makes it feel authentic in a way that’s hard to replicate.

What customers say?

“ Located about a 10-minute walk from JR Shinjuku Station, this restaurant is located north of Kabukicho. Look for the brown sign. The restaurant has a traditional diner-like atmosphere, which is quite unusual for a restaurant in Kabukicho. There are 22 seats in total (6 counter seats, 2 two-person tables, and 3 four-person tables). We visited a little after 8 PM on a Friday. Despite opening at 8 PM, the restaurant was already bustling with customers. We ordered the following: ◾Gindara Teriyaki Set Meal: 1,500 yen The gindara was a thick piece of meat. The surface was fragrant and delicious. The appetizers included simmered daikon radish and fried tofu. The dashi broth was quite flavorful and delicious. The pickled daikon radish was also delicious. ◾ Deep-fried Tofu: 500 yen The combination of the dashi-flavored soy sauce and deep-fried tofu was excellent. It was an addictive flavor. ◾ Mentaiko Tamagoyaki: 720 yen At first glance, it looks like a simple omelet, but it's filled with plenty of spicy mentaiko. This is a restaurant I'd definitely like to return to. ”

“ No english menu available. The waiter knew very basic English and with some help with translation tools we were able to order without a problem. The food it is what is expected from a teishoku. Good price and frequented by local workers. ”

“ This is a "teishoku-ya" (set meal restaurant) in Kabukicho that's open late at night. They serve alcohol and side dishes, but perhaps it was just a coincidence that it was the day I visited, but other than me, the only customers were only eating set meals and no one was drinking. It seems like most of the clientele is people who work late at night. Considering the location in Kabukicho and the late-night hours, the prices were reasonable, and each of the appetizers was carefully prepared, so I was very satisfied. ”

“ I visited a little after 9 PM on a weekday. I heard there's a 10% late-night fee from 9 PM to 6 AM. There was only one other customer there, but more arrived soon, bringing the total to about 10. There's no appetizer fee if you only order the set meal and don't order alcohol, so most people order the set meal. I ordered the fried chicken with tartar sauce set meal for 910 yen (a total of 1000 yen with the late-night fee). The rice was small and a little hard and dry. (Perhaps it was old rice.) The fried chicken was spicy with soy sauce, the salad was smeared with dressing, and while the miso soup was refillable, the only topping was cabbage, so I didn't feel like ordering more. However, the portions were generous, and since you can get most of the menu for 1000 yen, I think this is a valuable set meal restaurant. The clientele was diverse, but one woman sat down and then left the door open without saying a word a few minutes later, which I thought was appropriate for the area. ”
